Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Statement
All dog care providers use our local environment through our parks and nature reserves. They also have significant social impact and influence with the people we interact with, be they customers, other dog owners, or the general public. A professional canine care provider should build their business inherently on trust, responsibility, and community integration.
This statement outlines the commitment of Boyd’s Boarding & Canine Care Ltd. to sustainable, ethical and well-governed practices that protect our environment and demonstrates appropriate stewardship of the environments we operate in, respect our public spaces, safeguard our clients and the animals, and maintain operational transparency.
Environmental Responsibility (E)
We shall advocate for sustainable canine care practices through conscious sourcing and waste management decisions:
-
Sustainable Waste Management: We use certified bio-degradable and compostable waste bags to reduce long-term plastic pollution in our local ecosystems.
- Responsible Sourcing: We only use single source protein treats when providing our services, unless a particular treat of diet is required for an animal. This commitment minimises the ecological strain, carbon emissions and complex supply chain associated with multi-protein, mass-produced alternatives.
- Future Environmental Planning: We acknowledge that it is not always possible to minimize our operational footprint today, but we commit to evaluating environmental opportunities as our business grows—specifically when it comes to renewing and developing our vehicle fleet.
Social Impact & Community (S)
It is important to create positive relationship with our customers, other pet-owners and the broader community whilst preserving our natural spaces we operate in and share:
- Land Preservation and Legal Compliance: We provide specialised adventure activities in areas of greenbelt land, conservations areas, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and delicate ecosystems. To ensure we do not disturb these we ensure adherence to land management guidelines to reduce disruption to local wildlife and actively support the upkeep of our public forests and nature trails.
- Canine Health & Welfare: We employ force-free, positive care methods. Our staff hold Ofqual-regulated certifications including the iPET Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid, ensuring we possess the practical skills to handle complex medical emergencies, manage shock, and conduct CPR under stress. Our use of single-source protein treats also serves a dual purpose by reducing allergen risks, prioritising the physical wellbeing of the dogs in our care.
- Public Space Citizenship: We uphold and comply with local by-laws, Public Space Protection Orders and ensure we keep to trail boundaries by utilising Ordinance Survey digital maps, ensuring our activities remain respectful of other public space users and local environments.
- Supporting the Local Economy: Where possible and suitable we commit to use local businesses and independent suppliers, and regional service providers ensuring our business activities and growth are able to contribute directly the economic vitality of our local area and wide region.
- Community Engagement & Public Education: We actively participate in local community events to combine business awareness with public education. Aligning with our Regulatory Advocacy Statement, we use these platforms to openly educate pet owners on industry regulatory gaps, canine welfare standards to empower our community to make informed choices for their pets.
Governance & Ethical Practice (G)
We strive to maintain higher standards of professional accountability, transparency, data safety and regulatory compliance to enhance the partner and community trust:
- Industry Advocacy & Leadership: We actively advocate for higher standards within the pet care sector by maintaining a formal ‘Regulatory Advocacy Statement’. We use our digital platforms and in-person public events to educate the public on the current regulatory gaps in dog walking and home sitting services. To counter this lack of industry regulation, we voluntarily enforce internal transparency by presenting physical copies of our qualifications, DBS certificates, and Animal Transporter Authorisation at all initial client assessments.
- Workplace Safety & Higher Licensing Standards: We minimise operational risk by undertaking specialised training, including the iPET Level 3 in Dog Boarding and Day Care and the iPET Level 4 Award in Emergency Canine First Aid in the Workplace. This embeds rigid health and safety risk assessments, formal incident reporting, and emergency planning directly into our daily operations while positioning the business to meet or exceed Defra’s Higher Standard criteria.
- Biosecurity & Regulatory Compliance: To maintain the highest standards of disease control and risk mitigation, our vehicle sanitisation protocols only use DEFRA-approved cleaning products. This ensures compliance with national biosecurity recommendations, protecting animals in our care from cross-contamination and infectious pathogens. We maintain detailed logs of canines transported in our vehicles so we can trace back any animals potentially impacted by a reported disease outbreak.
- Information Security & Data Protection: Our services require access to personal residences and we ensure rigid data protection policies to safeguard our clients, the pets and personal property. This includes having a detailed data protection policy and customer privacy notice which includes a strict policy on not sharing images of customers pets or homes on social media. We pay and maintain our registration with the Information Commissioner, giving our customers and public avenues of redress if we fall short of the high expectations we should be held to.
- Corporate Structure & Statutory Transparency: We operate as a registered limited company (Boyd’s Boarding & Canine Care Ltd, Company No. 16554908). This corporate structure ensures we remain fully accountable to UK statutory regulations. We maintain complete transparency by filing public annual returns and financial statements with Companies House, separating personal interests from business liabilities to guarantee long-term operational continuity for our clients.
- Brand Protection & Intellectual Property: We have legally secured our brand name and logos by registering two distinct trademarks with the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO), covering three separate categories of business service. This means our business identity is officially certified and legally protected, ensuring our clients always know they are dealing with the genuine, authorised Boyd’s brand.
- Regulatory Standards & Insurance: We maintain robust corporate governance by holding comprehensive public liability insurance of £10 million, comprehensive motor vehicle insurance which includes animal courier activities instead of standard ‘pet taxi’ insurance. We display our company registration information and we align our activities with modern UK animal welfare standards and, where operationally possible, the requirements set out in the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the Welfare of Animals (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 and it associated statutory guidance and retained EU regulation 01/2005.
